English (Literacy) Prediction Lesson
Situation - On my EDN4100 practicum I had planned a literacy lesson focussing on predictions. The students had a term reader they were focusing on, the book was called 'Tales of a Fourth Grader' by Judy Blume. When planning this lesson I did not have background information about studetns prior knowledge of what they knew about predictions.
Action - As I planned the lesson, I decided I would have a discussion and question time about what knoweldge students knew about predictions and what it was. In my lesson I had outlines that I would have a discussion with students as a whole class about what they thought predictions were and what it meant to make one. I then had students make a prediction about the book, by looking at the cover page only. (the lesson is furthered explained in the document below)
Observation - Having the students participate in a discussion on their prior knowledge of what the word 'prediction' meant to them was a great way to start as I could see and hear some students not having a clue on what it was. Having that discussion gave encouragement to those who had no idea and be on the right track. I felt that the students made great progress throughout the lesson with their predictions.
