Know students and how they learn (Standard 1): Diagnostic profile of Class
Diagnostic Profile of Class
Situation - Before term one started we used the previous year’s summative assessments and results to profile the students reading, spelling and math abilities. We do this in the beginning so that we are able to capture the range of ability in the classroom; this is then helpful in arranging the ability groups according to their comprehension, spelling and math’s ability and workload.
Action - After assessing their results from the diagnostic testing, we were able to create, plan and group the students in their ability groups. The ability groups mainly targeted the English subject, which included reading, spelling and comprehension. We also included how well we knew each student, how they learn and their confidence. For Math’s, this was taught as a whole class, but keeping in mind the different math abilities and incorporating a range of strategies and materials that cover each concept and reinforce the proficiency strands (Understanding, reasoning, problem-solving and fluency).
Observation - Students are able to show their ability within their groups, they are able to go up or down a level throughout the year; this all depends on how much effort and capability the students show in improving or not being able to meet the requirements to achieve or complete the workload. The purpose of grouping students is so that they are able to excel and improve their abilities.
