Reflection
Throughout my FPE, I found that planning lesson sequences and programs as a new teacher was very time consuming. I believe when it comes to planning the quality should be at a high standard, challenging but yet achievable by students. Lessons should be academically challenging but with also students using personal skills such as time management, responsibility and problem-solving skills. I believe that every child is capable of learning, developing and improve on their ability in all areas, whether it be academically or socially. As a teacher I will encourage and implement effective and engaging ways to help students further their ability.
Using ICT
During my FPE, I had to plan multiple lessons that had to be engaging for the students. I found out very early that the students in my class engage is lessons where ICT had been used. Whether it be a PowerPoint, YouTube video or using their I-pads. Finding this out early I had always tried my best to include any form of ICT in my lesson, I used this as the engaging point of my lesson. One of my HASS lesson taught had a lot of information given to the students, but I found at the end students weren’t really engaging and were off task very quickly. As I reflected on the lesson on my own and with my mentor, it was suggested that I incorporate some sort of ICT to engage the students right away. I took on the feedback and suggestions to plan my next lesson. In the next lesson I had implemented a YouTube video where I knew it would engage the students right away, I also included the use of I-pads throughout the HASS lessons and the result showed that the students were engaged and incorporating their ICT skills.
Learning Goals
Each lesson taught throughout my FPE, I included learning goals. These goals were not always academically, I feel that students need that exposure to various interpersonal skills throughout their life and not just academically. Throughout my Maths and HASS lessons where students had tasks they needed to complete whether it be individual or with a group I had set times to complete tasks given. This allowed them to practice their time management skills, I did find this useful as some students in the class did not finish work within the time frame or didn’t engage in the group discussions. I had always allowed time for sharing so that those students who struggle to answer questions or engage in discussion due to not understanding, the sharing and discussion part of the lesson allows the students to share their knowledge to then be able to put that knowledge learnt into the tasks given.
I believe that have goals in general is a good thing to have children set, because it gives them the responsibility to keep track of it, to see the development and improvement from start to finish.
Verbal Communication Strategies
Early into my FPE, I found that the students in my class respond really well to verbal instructions and cues. In the first two weeks of term 1 I got the chance to go into the class to observe and with this I had learnt some cues my mentor teacher had used and worked. So, I used these cues in term 2 to gain the students attention when it came to giving out instructions. Although these cues worked well, my mentor teacher had suggested that I bring in my own cues to show my personality and how I would implement it in my teaching. At first, I found it hard to come up with one as I was so use to using ones they had already known. In one of my Maths lesson I decided to introduce my students to a new cue, I had explained to students that I would call out ‘macaroni cheese’ and they would reply ‘everybody freeze’ I then went onto explaining that when this cue was used, everyone was to stop whatever they were doing and give their full attention to me. I tested it out a few times with the students and also getting them to tell me what had to be done when the cue was being used, this was to check for understanding. As a result, I used this verbal cue throughout my teaching and I saw that it really helped with getting students attention.

Action plan
One subject area I didn’t have much experience in teaching is Science. During my FPE, my mentor had taught science as she had already had a whole unit of work planned for the term, although I had assisted wherever I could. I have not yet planned or taught a science lesson, but I did in one of my placements which was only a brief lesson on how light is created. So, to further my learning I would like to do some professional learning in science to improve the little knowledge I have to be able to confidently teach this area. I have searched and found that Scitech is holding free digital technologies workshops (series of 4 workshops) in the month of October and also a Teachmeet WA – Student-led (YrK-12) in November, I think these workshops will be helpful to attend and further my knowledge in the science department.

Evidence
3.3 Include a range of teaching strategies.
In my Math lesson I decided to use the 'placemat' method where I got students to brainstorm ideas on a specific topic. Each table had a different topic and students had 1 minute to write as much they knew about that topic, they also had the opportunity to ask question in the placemat activity. After the minute had been over each student would move to the next placemat and repeat this until they have been to all placemats. I found this method was very effective as it got students to share what they knew and for those who didn't know anything learn what others had written. The sharing process was necessary as everyone got to hear what other had written and this was also anonymous so there was no right or wrong answer.

3.4 Demonstrate knowledge of a range of resources, including ICT, that engage students in their learning.
I used 'Quizizz' as a pre-assessment tool in my Math lesson.
Students were to join the game/quiz, enter the code I had put on the board and then complete the quiz in their own time. Students had a time limit on each question, I had made sure that each question had a reasonable time before it moved onto the next question. This was an individual task and I specifically chose this quiz creator because it had jumbled the questions for each students but they were still completing the exact same quiz. |
'Do Ink' was an app that I got the students to use on their I-pads to film their oral presentation for HASS. They had to use the green screen that was provided in the classroom. After seeing the creativeness students had in their ICT lesson previously using this app, I implemented it into my teaching.
I felt that this app was suited to the year level and also appropriate to the assessment I was getting students to complete. I was very impressed with the result of their oral presentation, some were fantastic with the use of this app. |
