Reflection
I believe that being a successful teacher is one who interacts with everyone involved in the education of the students in my class. This includes students, colleagues at the school, parents and carers and the wider community. In some way these people have an influence on students learning, and therefore building that strong and professional relationship with them will increase students’ success, but also help and improve my teaching.
Parents/Carers Interviews
During my FPE, I was lucky enough to sit in on several parent teacher meetings. During these parent and teacher meetings I was able to observe some of the strategies my mentor teacher introduced to the parents and/or carers of the child, one of the strategies I saw introduced to parents were sight words that focused on the spelling words that the child was struggling with. My mentor teacher voiced her concern of the child to the parents and then demonstrated the strategy and activity the child has to do at home to improve their spelling ability. Being able to sit through these meetings I found I learnt a lot from my mentor and the response from the parents as well. The encouragement coming from my mentor and the parents to improve the child’s spelling was evident, this showed me as a future teacher that putting in the extra effort into preparing and planning extra resources to help students improve their learning ability in and out of school.

Action plan
- Through social media such as Facebook groups and blogs that are educational based have been really helpful throughout my FPE, my mentor had introduced me to multiple groups and I myself have joined several teaching groups. These groups allow me to ask questions and have discussions anything educational based, I have found this very helpful as I have learnt a lot from others. Even though I am apart of these groups already, I look forward to joining more in the near future.
- Although I didn’t have much community involvement in my FPE, When I get my placement for my teaching job, I will do research into the community around the school and see how I can involve and implement them more into my classroom. By doing this I will also have a better understanding of the community itself but also the students in my classroom and their backgrounds.
Evidence
7.3 Understand strategies for working effectively, sensitively and confidentially with parents/carers.
I've had the chance to sit in on a few parent-teacher interviews. The interviews mainly consist of academic purposes with the occasional question from parents asking about their child's behaviour in the classroom. I had the opportunity to listen to what academic and profession discussion and decisions my mentor teacher discussed with the parents. A number of strategies were demonstrated and provided to the parents to help facilitate their child's learning process and development. Having this opportunity really informed me on how to approach parent interviews and what needs to be planned before hand and the relevant information given.
